Chapter 7

The Yoga of Knowledge and Realization

Krishna reveals something amazing — he is present in everything! He is the taste in water, the light in the sun, and the fragrance in the earth. Most people don't notice this because the world is like a magic show that keeps us distracted. But those who look with love can see the divine everywhere.

Art Style: Pichwai from Rajasthan Learn more

Pichwai paintings are large cloth artworks that hang behind the idol of Shrinathji (a form of Krishna as a child) in temples of Nathdwara, Rajasthan. Each painting shows Krishna in different moods and seasons — playing in the rain, celebrating Holi, or dancing under the full moon. The style uses rich, deep colors on dark backgrounds, with incredibly detailed lotus flowers, cows, and gopis (milkmaids) arranged in symmetrical patterns around the central figure.

Signature Elements

  • Dark, jewel-toned backgrounds
  • Central figure of Krishna surrounded by devotees
  • Elaborate lotus ponds and flowering trees
  • Cows as recurring sacred motifs

Did you know?

A single Pichwai painting can take months to complete because every tiny detail — each petal on a lotus, each bead on a necklace — is painted by hand with brushes made from squirrel hair!

7.1

Krishna

Krishna says: "Arjuna, keep your whole mind resting on Me, hold on to Me as your shelter, and keep practising this path of joining your heart to Me. If you do that, I will tell you how you can come to know Me completely, with no doubt left in you at all. Listen now."

7.2

Krishna

Krishna says: "I will give you not just knowledge you can repeat, but knowledge you can live — the kind you feel in your bones. And once you truly know this one thing, there will be nothing left in all the world that you still need to know." It is the one understanding that contains every other.

7.3

Krishna

Krishna says: "Out of thousands of people, only a few even try hard to walk this path. And out of those who try and succeed, only a rare one comes to know Me as I truly am." It is not a warning — it is honest. Truly knowing the deepest thing is rare and precious, and worth striving for.

7.4

Krishna

Krishna lists the building blocks of the whole visible world: earth, water, fire, air, and space — and then the mind, the intellect, and the sense of "I." These eight, he says, are His lower nature: the outer stuff that everything you can touch and even think with is made from.

7.5

Krishna

Krishna says: "That was My lower nature. But know there is a higher nature too, mighty Arjuna — the living consciousness, the life inside all beings. It is by this higher nature that the whole world is held together." The body is the outer stuff; the life that shines through it is the deeper truth.

7.6

Krishna

Krishna says: "Understand this firmly — all beings everywhere are born from these two natures of Mine, the outer stuff and the inner life, joined together. I am where the whole universe comes from, and I am where it all returns at the end." Everything flows out of Him and back into Him, like breathing out and breathing in.

7.7

Krishna

Krishna says there is nothing higher than him, nothing beyond him at all. Everything in the whole universe is strung upon him the way pearls are strung upon a single thread. You may see only the bright beads, but it is the unseen thread running through them that holds them all together. He is that hidden thread inside everything.

7.8

Krishna

Krishna begins to point to himself inside ordinary things. "I am the taste in water," he says, "the light in the moon and the sun, the sacred sound Om in all the Vedas, the sound carried through open space, and the strength of spirit in people." He is not far away in the sky — he is the very essence hiding inside everything we meet.

7.9

Krishna

Krishna keeps showing where he hides inside the world. "I am the pure, sweet fragrance of the earth," he says, "the brightness in fire, the very life in all living beings, and the disciplined effort of those who practise hard." Wherever something is fresh, or bright, or alive, or quietly determined — that is him.

7.10

Krishna

Krishna tells Arjuna to know him as the eternal seed of all beings — the tiny source from which everything grows. He is the intelligence inside everyone who is wise, and the brightness inside everyone who shines. Just as a whole tree is hidden inside one small seed, the whole world is hidden inside him.

7.11

Krishna

Krishna says he is the strength of the strong — but the kind of strength that carries no greed and no selfish craving with it. And in all living beings, he is desire itself, as long as that desire does not go against what is right. Wanting good things in a fair way is part of him; it is only selfish, greedy wanting that pulls us away.

7.12

Krishna

Everything calm and pure (sattva), everything restless and passionate (rajas), and everything heavy and dull (tamas) all come from Krishna. But here is the surprise: he is not trapped inside them — they are inside him. The whole changing world rests in him, while he stays free and untouched, the way the sun shines on everything without ever getting dirty.

7.13

Krishna

The whole world is fooled by three powers Krishna calls the gunas — calmness, restlessness, and dullness. They mix together and colour everything we see, like coloured glass over our eyes. Because of them, people look right at the world and miss the one who holds it all up. They do not see Krishna, who is higher than the three powers and never changes or fades.

7.14

Krishna

Krishna says this veil of his — woven from the three gunas — is divine and very, very hard to cross on your own. It is like a flooded river too wide and too wild to swim. But there is one way across: those who take refuge in Krishna alone, holding on to him with their whole heart, pass safely beyond it. The veil that no one can cross by force opens for the one who simply trusts.

7.15

Krishna

Some people never turn to Krishna at all — not because he hides, but because they have let their hearts grow cruel and cloudy. The veil of maya has carried their wisdom away, so even when the truth stands right in front of them, they cannot see it. Holding tight to anger, greed, and harm, they look straight at goodness and miss it completely.

7.16

Krishna

Krishna names four kinds of good-hearted people who turn to him. The first is the one in trouble, who calls out for help. The second is the curious one, who wants to understand and know. The third is the one who hopes for something good — a gift, a blessing, a need met. And the fourth is the wise one, who already knows and loves Krishna for his own sake. All four come to him by different doors.

7.17

Krishna

Of the four kinds of devotees, Krishna says the wise one stands out — the one who stays joined to him always and loves him with a single, whole heart, not asking for anything in return. To this wise lover, Krishna is dearer than anything in the world. And here is the most tender part: Krishna says that this person is just as dear to him. The love runs both ways.

7.18

Krishna

Krishna says all four kinds of devotees are good and noble — every one of them. But the wise one, he says, is something more: he is Krishna's very own Self. Because this devotee's heart is steady and joined to Krishna, holding nothing else as the goal, Krishna feels that the two of them are not really separate at all. The wise lover has settled into Krishna as the highest of all aims.

7.19

Krishna

Krishna says: after many, many lifetimes of searching, the truly wise person finally comes to Me. They see that Vasudeva — the divine — is everything, hidden inside all that exists. A soul who sees the world that way is very, very rare, like one perfect pearl found after sifting through a whole sea of sand.

7.20

Krishna

Krishna explains that some people let their many wishes carry their wisdom away. So instead of seeking the one source of everything, they run to smaller gods, each with its own little ritual, hoping for this gift or that gift. Their own habits and nature pull them this way and that, like leaves blown about by the wind.

7.21

Krishna

Krishna says: whatever form a person chooses to worship with real, sincere faith, I am the one who makes that faith steady and strong. He never turns anyone away for praying the "wrong" way. If the heart is true, the divine itself steadies that little flame of faith and keeps it burning.

7.22

Krishna

Filled with that steady faith, the devotee worships their chosen form and truly receives what they hoped for. But here is the secret: those gifts come from Me alone. No matter which form gives the blessing, it is really the one divine source flowing out through it.

7.23

Krishna

Krishna says: the rewards won by worshipping smaller goals are real, but they do not last — they have an ending. People who pray only to the lesser gods reach the lesser gods. But those whose hearts are set on Me come all the way to Me, to that which never ends.

7.24

Krishna

Krishna says that people who do not understand think He is only the small, visible form they can see — as if the formless divine had simply turned into one body. They do not realize His true nature: a higher, unchanging, supreme Self that never ends and can never be fully captured in any single shape.

7.25

Krishna

Krishna says: "I do not shine out openly for everyone to see. I am wrapped in My own wonderful power, yoga-maya, like a sun behind clouds. So this confused world looks right at Me and does not recognise Me — it cannot tell that I am the one who was never born and who never fades away."

7.26

Krishna

Krishna says: "Arjuna, I know every being that has ever lived, every being alive right now, and every being that is still to come. The past, the present, the future — all of it is open before Me. But Me? No one knows Me fully — not even the wise, not even the gods."

7.27

Krishna

Krishna says: "Arjuna, two feelings rise up in us all the time — wanting and not-wanting, liking and disliking. From these grow all the pairs that pull us this way and that: hot and cold, pleasure and pain, win and lose. From the moment they are born, almost all beings get tossed about by these opposites and lose their way."

7.28

Krishna

Krishna says: "But there are people whose good deeds have slowly washed their wrongs away, until nothing harmful is left holding them back. These people are no longer tossed about by liking and disliking, by the swing of opposites. With steady hearts and a firm promise, they turn to Me and stay."

7.29

Krishna

Krishna says: "Some people long to be free from growing old and from dying — free from the whole tiring cycle. They take refuge in Me and put their whole effort into the search. These people come to know Brahman, the boundless reality; they understand the true Self within; and they understand all about action too. Nothing important stays hidden from them."

7.30

Krishna

Krishna closes the chapter: "Those who know Me in everything — in the world of things, in the world of the shining gods, and in every offering of the heart — hold Me in their minds always. And because their hearts are steady and joined to Me, they know Me even at the very last moment, the hour when they leave this life. They are never lost, for they carry Me to the end."
